Fforest Fawr Geopark is a designated area in South Wales known for its outstanding geological heritage, diverse landscapes, and rich outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, caving, and mountain biking.
Fforest Fawr Geopark covers a significant portion of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales and was designated as a Geopark in 2005 due to its exceptional geological features. It spans approximately 800 square kilometers and includes a range of landscapes such as limestone plateaus, dramatic escarpments, glacial landforms, and ancient woodland. The area is notable for its complex geology, including karst formations and caves, with well-known sites like Dan-yr-Ogof, one of the largest cave systems in Wales. Ecologically, the geopark supports heathlands, upland pastures, and diverse habitats for flora and fauna including rare birds and upland mammals. Historically, the area holds evidence of prehistoric human activity as well as remnants from the industrial past, including old mining sites and tramroads.
